Traffic for any website in this cramped world wide web depends on how well your site is indexed by search engine bots (in particular Google) . If you built a website on say a hobby like "Bird Watching" - you will get more traffic if your site appears on first page if some one searches for "Bird Watching" on Google. Ok fine you have made your search engine friendly, but how can you know whether Google is indexing your website like the way you like to? How to know how many links your website is having from other websites ? (more inward links better rank on search) . To help you in all this Google has ->Webmaster Tools . It is free - all you need is a (free) Google account and you have to authenticate that you have the access to the source code of your website( which requires adding a simple meta tag to your website) .

Google Webmaster Tools is a no-charge web service by Google for webmasters. It allows webmasters to check indexing status and optimize visibility of their websites.Above all it is one-stop shop for webmaster resources that will help with your crawling and indexing questions, introduce you to offerings that can enhance and increase traffic to your site, and connect you with your visitors. If you are having a personal blog or business website for which you want more traffic- Webmaster tools is an indispensable tool.

It has tools that let the webmasters:

  • Submit and check a sitemap
  • Check and set the crawl rate, and view statistics about how Googlebot accesses a particular site
  • Generate and check a robots.txt file
  • List internal and external pages that link to the site
  • See what keyword searches on Google led to the site being listed in the SERPs, and the click through rates of such listings
  • View statistics about how Google indexes the site, and if it found any errors while doing it
  • Set a preferred domain (e.g. prefer over or vice versa), which determines how the site URL is displayed in SERPs
