All Set For The Mega Opening of Delhi Common Wealth Games

The 19TH Common Wealth Games to be held in New Delhi from the 3rd to the 14th of October, have faced enough flak and wrath from many a quarter, due to various factors. The hygiene, the security and the wild life that thrived on the premises right from frogs, mosquitoes, snakes to monkeys to God knows what have all made it to the news for the wrong reasons.

With a total of 7000 participants and officials arriving from 71 countries and territories, the games are destined to be one of the biggest events hosted by India, after the 1982 Asian Games.This Commonwealth Games set a historic landmark of being the biggest-ever in terms of participants with more than 6700 athletes and officials confirming their entries for the event.

Despite all the glitches, the opening ceremony promises to be a gala event . In just under 24 hours the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games will get underway with a grand opening ceremony -- an event that will see the likes of music maestro AR Rehman perform and athletes from 71 teams take the oath. The opening ceremony promises to be full of grandeur and elegance with dancers representing the culture of India.

The Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton will be in its final leg today when it will be taken to the venue of the Opening Ceremony the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium .Queen’s Baton has finally reached the Common Wealth Games village on Saturday.On Saturday it took a trip to Gurudwara rakab Ganj and Sacred Heart Catheral.On Friday, Queen’s Baton took a trip across landmarks in the Commonwealth Games host city.The Baton’s journey began from Vijay Chowk amid loud cheers and clap from onlookers.

The opening ceremony of the games would be taking Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. Indian Olympic gold-medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra has been named as the host country’s flag bearer during opening ceremony. The Opening Ceremony will be a display of Indian culture, showing the world the country’s history, art, music and dance and promises to be a spectacular and colourful exhibition, with 60,000 spectators in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium which will also house the Closing Ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010.

The legendary Jawaharlal Nehru Sports (JNS) Complex, named after the first Prime Minister of India, was the main venue for the IX Asian Games in 1982. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is situated near the Central Government Offices (C.G.O.) Complex in the Lodhi Road area. It’s an all-purpose sports complex and has hosted many sports events.

Renovated for the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex is the main venue for the mega-sporting event hosting, apart from Athletics, Lawn Bowls and Weightlifting, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies will showcase India’s great civilisation, its history, cultural diversity, varied art forms, music and dance.

The unique membrane roof will shelter 60,000 spectators. The main stadium has two outer basket-like supporting columned structures carrying not only the compression rings but also the complete ramp system for access and evacuation.
