ICC World Twenty20 2010 - India Vs West Indies Highlights

Gayle blows Dhoni’s men away

The West Indies, as promised, sprinkled a barrage of perfume balls to Indian batsmen and it was obvious they didn’t like the smell of the leather.India’s much-exposed inadequacies against short-pitched balls once again came to haunt them as they suffered a 14-run loss against the hosts in their Super Eights clash here at the Kensington Oval on Sunday.

Their slipshod catching had allowed the West Indies to a competitive total—169 for six––but it wasn’t a target out of India’s reach considering the fact that they had an extra batsman in their line-up. But as against Australia they once again flattered to deceive replying with 155 for nine.

Dropped chance

Chris Gayle was dropped when the batsman was only on 46 by the combination of MS Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan who collided with each other as the offer went abegging. Gayle, however, was in no mood to let go the opportunity hammering 52 more runs from just 26 balls.

“It was a mistake,” admitted Dhoni later. “I did see Yusuf but he wasn’t going for the catch, and later I didn’t see Yusuf running. May be if we had caught him then they would have scored less,” he added.

After Gayle’s whirlwind knock, India’s top-order was choked for runs by the Windies’ new-ball bowlers. They were peppered with bouncers and even Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo, not as quick as Kemar Roach and Jerome Taylor, troubled them.

Mathematically, they can still sneak into the semifinals but a lot rides on how the other matches go. If India are to harbour any hopes of a last-four berth, then Australia have to win both their matches against Sri Lanka and the West Indies and the 2007 champions should ensure a victory in their final match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday at St Lucia. This will leave India, Lanka and West Indies with one win each. With the run-rate coming into play, India then can hope for a semifinal berth.
