The Peace Keeping Force in Congo The Indian Army is the worlds second largest army in terms of military personnel. It is a voluntary service. The army has rich combat experience in diverse terrains, due to Indias diverse geography and also has a distinguished history of serving in United Nations Peace keeping Operations. India is one of the largest contributors to United Nations Peace Keeping Operations. Since its first commitment in Korea in 1950, Indian Army has participated in several most difficult UN peace keeping operations and won the universal acclaim for their professional excellence. So far, Indian Army has taken part in 43 Peacekeeping Missions with more than 90,000 troops all over the world. Some of the countries are Congo, Cambodia, Somalia, Lebanon, Ethiopia and Sudan. The basic responsibility of the Army is to safeguard the territorial integrity of the nation against external aggression. Due to countrys long borders encompassing different geographical and climatic conditions such as desert terrain on the west, snow-covered mountains in the north and thick rainfed mountainous jungles in the east, the Army has to constantly prepare itself for diverse challenges. In addition, the Army is often required to assist the civil administration during internal security disturbances and in the maintenance of law and order, in organising relief operations during natural calamities like floods, earthquakes and cyclones and in the maintenance of essential services. |
Indian Army is one of the finest Armies in the world. Modernisation and upgradation of Army is a continuous process to keep the Armed Forces ready to meet any challenge of tomorrow. A few projects of modernistaion are- Procurement of a range of night vision equipment for the T-72 and T-55 tanks as well as the integration of existing TI sight with other weapon system for Infantry Combat Vehicle (ICV) BMP-2 is being carried out on priority. Super Generation II Sight for tanks is also being procured. The mobility and navigational capabilities of T-72 tanks and ICV BMP-2 are being enhanced by upgradation of their Power Pack, GPS and Advanced Land Navigation Systems. To enhance ef ciency and to make training more cost effective, BMP Driving Simulator has been contracted and scheme for Gunnery Simulators is at advanced stage of procurement.

The primary responsibility of the Army is to defend the country against external aggression and to safeguard territorial integrity of the nation. In the prevalent geopolitical, social and strategic environment the task of the Army has become enormous. The contours of India's security challenges are numerous and varied. To the military complexities arising out of the problems of unsettled borders, the challenges of the proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir, the insurgency in the North East and the growing naxal menance in Central India, we can now add the ever enlarging spectre of terrorism and numerous non-military threats to our security. The Armed Forces are constantly reviewing preparedness to meet these challenges. The Indian Army is equipped with requisite modern technology and equipment to enhance its combat capabilities. The focus of modernization has been on capability for Network Centre Warfare, Nuclear, Biological & Chemical (NBC) protection, increased mobility, improvement in fire power, enhanced surveillance capability and night fighting capabilities. The modernized Infantry Battalion of the Indian Army is provided with the state-of-the-art weapon systems of great lethality, range and precision, thermal imaging devices, bullet and mine-proof vehicles and secure radio sets enhancing its combat potential, surveillance and counter-insurgency capabilities..
India amid challenging neighborhood, already participated in four wars with Pakistan, including one undeclared war and one war with China since the partition in 1947, as well as many border skirmishes and military stand-offs. Additionally, India has accused Pakistan of engaging in proxy wars by providing military and financial assistance to violent non-state actors. So India is pulling all it's resources to update and to equip it's defence forces with the Modern warfare. India is following a two prong approach, buying from the world players through defence deals with various countries and producing in-house by developing the skill bank and industry. The indiginizing effort now a days gained good momentum even though not up to the required extent. LCA tejas , Kaveri Engine , Medium Combat Air Crafts etc. are at various stages of development.

Indigenously developed micro-light and pilot-less target aircraft Lakshya-1 was successfully test flown from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur near Balasore on Tuesday.
'Lakshya-1, fitted with an advanced digitally controlled engine was successfully test flown at about 11.40 AM to check the validity of its engine and duration enhancement, defence sources said."It is a routine trial by the users," the sources said.

Indigenously designed and developed RUSTOM-1 made 5th successful Flight on 11th November, while flying at an altitude of 2300 ft AGL (above ground level) & at a speed 100 Knots during 25 minute of cruise near Hosur. It may be noted that this Medium Altitude Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (MALE - UAV) is developed by DRDO with Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) Bangalore as the nodal laboratory. It had its maiden flight in 2010.

India today successfully test fired the most advanced long range missile system Agni-4 today(15th november,2011). The missile was launched from a Road Mobile System at 9.00 AM from Wheelers’ Island off the coast of Odisha. The missile followed its trajectory with a range of more than 3000 Kms, in a text book fashion, attained a height of about 900 kms and reached the pre-designated target in the international waters of Bay of Bengal. All mission objectives were fully met. All the systems functioned perfectly till the end encountering the re-entry temperatures of more than 3000⁰C.

Within a span of two days, India demonstrated the reliability of two surface-to-surface missiles by successfully test-firing nuclear-weapons capable Shaurya and Prithvi-II ballistic systems on saturday(24th september) and Monday(26th september).
Shaurya, a nuclear-capable surface-to-surface medium range missile, was test-fired from Chandipur-on-sea off the Orissa coast at 2.30 PM on Saturday. The missile with a maximum range of 750 km was test-fired from an underground silo at Integrated Test Range of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO)...

Tejas (LCA) , India's very own Light Combat Aircraft has achieved an important milestone by gaining Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) in December 2010 . This has authenticated the Indian aircraft's airworthiness. The birth of India's first fighter aircraft is thus certified. So far, 1,659 flight tests have been completed.
LCA, Tejas Phase-ll Programme (Air Force version) was sanctioned in November 2001 at a cost`of Rs.3301.78 Cr. with Probable Date of Completion (PDC) of December 2008. The project is likely to be completed by December 2012 with an additional cost of Rs.2475.78 Cr. The additional cost is to meet the expanded scope of the programme, increased cost of materials, manpower, maintenance of facilities, etc.
Indian Air Force has ordered 40 Tejas Mk-I aircraft (20 aircraft in IOC and 20 aircraft in FOC standard). Two aircraft will be ready by March 2012 for induction.

As part of its endeavour to create a shield against incoming enemy missiles,the indigenous interceptor was fired from Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast near Dhamra in Bhadrak district.
"Aimed at developing a full fledged multi-layer Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, the trial was carried out from two launch sites of ITR off Orissa coast," defence sources said.

In a major victory for the army, an advanced version of BrahMos block-II was successfully tested from the integrated test range at Chandipur off Orissa coast on 5th September(sunday) ..
