INDIAN SPACE RESEARCH - Launch Vehicles

Satellite Launch Vehicle

Satellite Launch Vehicle

The First Launch in 1979 failed. The launcher collapsed in Bay of Bengal. The second launch in July 1980 placed successfully the imaging satellite into orbit. But the satellite perigee was less than required and finalluy satelliete burnt in atmosphere after 130 orbits.

The first two launches in 1987 and 1989 were failed.Later it was only used two times and it successfully placed scientific experiment satellites in orbit in 1992 and 1994. It placed a satellite of 150 kg at a height of 435 Kms.

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle

Satellite Launch Vehicle

The First Launch in 1993 was unsuccessful. But after betwen 1993 and 2010 15 successful launces were done and imaging and experimental satellites were placed into orbits. This also include four foreign satellites.India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C14, in its 16th Mission launched 958 kg Oceansat-2 and six nano-satellites into a 720 km. intended Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO) on September 23, 2009.

PSLV is a four-stage launch vehicle employing both solid and liquid propulsion stages. PSLV is the trusted workhorse launch Vehicle of ISRO. PSLV has repeatedly proved its reliability and versatility by launching 39 spacecrafts (17 Indian and 22 for international customers) into a variety of orbits so far. It may be recalled that during its previous mission, PSLV had successfully launched RISAT-2 and ANUSAT spacecrafts on April 20, 2009.

In its standard configuration, the 44 m tall PSLV has a lift-off mass of 295 tonne. It is a four-stage launch vehicle with the first and the third stages as well as the six strap-ons surrounding the first stage using HTPB based solid propellant. PSLV's first stage is one of the largest solid propellant boosters in the world. Its second and fourth stages use liquid propellants.

This mission is unique for PSLV as this is the first time that new AMC/ATS based avionics is being used for a typical SSPO mission. A Core Alone configuration of the vehicle with PS4 L2.5 stage is being employed to put the satellites in orbit. This is the fifth mission of PSLV in Core alone configuration.

In 2003 , it launched India's remote sensing satellite IRP6 which is capable of resolution of 5m. The photos of Puri temple obtained were shown to then Prime minister Mr. Bajpayee. He was amussed seeing the clarity and resolution. This vehicle can launch upto around one ton capacity.

Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle

Satellite Launch Vehicle

The First flight was done in 2001.Two more launches in 2003 and 2004 successfully placed two commercial satellites in orbit. Two types are there, one MK-1 and MK-2. MK- 2 is with a Indian design engine. On 20 September 2004, the GSLV launched the 2-tonne EDUSAT, the world's first satellite dedicated to providing support for educational projects. The ground tests for the cryogenic engine are completed> The completely indigenious GSLV MK- II will hit the sky soon.

GSLV MK - 3

Satellite Launch Vehicle

The Most pwerful rocket of India. It can launch the biggest satellites. Once it is commpletely up, India can strongly contend in the commercial space market. With this launcher, the launch would be half the cost that is charged by countries like US, France, Russia.

Payload for Chandrayaan-2 finalized - Will try out new Ideas

After a successful Chandrayaan I mission ISRO is now all geared up for Chandrayaan II. India's first lunar mission Chandrayaan-1 had accomplished nearly 95 per cent of its scientific objectives and is considered a success internationally.  It's on board NASA instrument made a buzz by confirming the presence of water/ice on Moon.

The Chandrayaan mission II is targeted in 2013. ISRO recently finalised the payloads that are to be flown onboard Chandrayaan II . Chandrayaan 2 will have an orbiter (satellite), a lander and a rover. Chandrayaan-2 is planned to be launched onboard Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. While the lander will be provided by Russia, the orbiter and the rover are being built by ISRO....

ISRO to take up Space Tourism

You must be well aware of the "Incredible India" campaign - with tag "Athithi devo Bava" meaning Guest is equal to god. Treating guests with utmost obedience and respect is what all ancient Indian texts preach. Now some may have reservations whether Indians still cling to it - but this respect to Guests is what attracted many foreign travelers and behind them the invaders and behind them colonizers. Ofcourse thats all a big history. The point here ISRO may soon come up with "Incredible (or Astonishing) Space" campaign  I am not kidding - The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is known to be taking space tourism very seriously. With the new chief Dr K Radhakrishnan in position, the organization is exploring new strategies and technologies for low cost space tourism.
