Missiles, Bombs , WMDs , Terrorists , Wars - Peace where are you ?
A nuclear Mushroom Cloud associated with Nuclear War fare - will be a common sight if world goes for World War III |
If we do not end war - war will end us. Everybody says that, millions of people believe it, and nobody does anything. -H.G. Wells
I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones. -Albert Einstein
A great war leaves the country with three armies - an army of cripples, an army of mourners, and an army of thieves. - German Proverb
Do you know how much money is spent on Military every year – worldwide? – It is 1100 billion $ of which 623 billion $ is by US alone and rest is by the rest of the world. And in situations of wars the spending is still higher. We spend so much money to plan killing and murdering of mass number of people (of course war is no more than a mass murder) but not for feeding one billion hungry people who sleep every night with empty stomachs. Why So? It is because - we are the most advanced of species to invent bombs, guns, AK 47s, nuclear weapons, missiles to kill our own fellows, our own neighbors. From the time of existence of man wars were fought for domination, material benefits... But with increase of population and increase of technology – life has turned out to be not having any value. A death count in hundreds is quiet normal and we hear them every day in news without caring much. Spending on Military is always getting a bigger pie of GDP and for some countries they spend more on military than on Education, health etc.
Indian Government - Spending - see 11 % on Defense |
As an example- shown adjacent is how Indian Government spends – as based on budget of 2008 -2009 , where it can be seen that spending on defense is as high as 11 % while it is only 21 % for total Central Planned Expenditure ( means including all health , education etc.). So the importance attributed to Military even in a Country where still lot of people are illiterate - can be understood.
Nations have recently been led to borrow billions for war; no nation has ever borrowed largely for education. Probably, no nation is rich enough to pay for both war and civilization. We must make our choice; we cannot have both.
Why all the world countries are building so much of armed man – if everyone wants peace. Nations building such a big armies and saying that we are against wars – is just like being vegetarian between meals. All greatest technologies are invented in Military only. Human use all new technologies to kill people first . It is in 1914 itself bombers(while the first successful flight was in 1901) were used in World War I – in World War II US has gone to the extent of exploding a nuclear bomb which was unheard before in the human history.
What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world. We are not going to get peace with millions of armed men. The chariot of peace cannot advance over a road littered with guns, rocket launchers and mutilated bodies.
A common Scene of War - Only killing - later justified on religion , nationality, color .... |
One psychological theory on why wars take place that looks at the leaders is advanced by Maurice Walsh. He argues that the general populace is more neutral towards war and that wars only occur when leaders with a psychologically abnormal disregard for human life are placed into power. War is caused by leaders that seek war such as Napoleon and Hitler. Such leaders most often come to power in times of crisis when the populace opts for a decisive leader, who then leads the nation to war. In 2003, Nobel Laureate Richard E. Smalley identified war as the sixth (of ten) biggest problems facing the society of mankind for the next fifty years.
Just see what Mark Twain has once rightly said - Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out... and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel.... And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man" - with his mouth.
Peace - Where are You?
We are in an epoch different to any other epoch in human history. The problems we are facing are global in nature. They include climate change, ever decreasing biodiversity, full use of the fresh water on the planet and underpinning all these – overpopulation. Without peace we will be unable to achieve the levels of cooperation, inclusiveness and social equity required to begin solving these challenges, let alone empower the international institutions needed to regulate them.
It is impossible to accurately portray the devastating effects that global challenges will have on us all unless unified global action is taken. Our shared challenges call for global solutions, and these solutions will require cooperation on a global scale unparalleled in human history.
The notion of peace and its value are poorly understood. There are competing definitions of peace, and most research into peace is, in fact, the study of violent conflict. In contrast to some theories which say democratic states rarely attack each other, the ongoing war in Iraq demonstrates how some democratic countries can be militant or belligerent—the justification for war often being that peace is ultimately secured through violence or the threat of violence.
Violence is often pursued as an antidote to shame or humiliation. The use of violence often is a source of pride and a defense of honor, especially among males who often believe violence defines manhood.
Global Peace Index
The Global Peace Index (GPI) is an attempt to measure the relative position of nations’ and regions’ peacefulness. It is the product of Institute for Economics and Peace and developed in consultation with an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes and think tanks with data collected and collated by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The list was launched first in May 2007 and then in May 2008 and on 2 June 2009 and recently 10 June 2010 and is claimed to be the first study to rank countries around the world according to their peacefulness. It ranks 149 countries (up from 121 in 2007). The study is the brainchild of Australian entrepreneur Steve Killelea . Factors examined by the authors include internal factors such as levels of violence and crime within the country and factors in a country's external relations such as military expenditure and wars.
India has tumbled seven places in the Global Peace Index — a ranking of the most peaceful nations of the world — thanks largely to the increase in the number of deaths from organized conflicts. The 2010 ranking of 149 nations places India at 128.
New Zealand tops the index as the most peaceful country and war-ravaged Iraq — no surprises here — has earned the distinction as the least peaceful nation and is kept company at the bottom of the list by Somlia, Afghanistan, Sudan and Pakistan.
The above Map Shows the Countries according to the Global Peace Index - The More Greener the More Peaceful are the countries and More Darker/Blacker are the least peaceful Countries
